Rose

3D Printed ABS Plastic and LED light

27x25x25cm,

2013

Rose's shape was inspired by a classical Greek vase form, I started printing this piece in red plastic but paused the print and replaced it with a white plastic to create the stripe. The LED is a simple circuit I made and is powered by a nine volt battery. The assembly is housed in a cavity in the base of the lamp, and is accessed by removing the bottom plate which is held in place by four 5 mm disk magnets on each side of the opening. The LED light shines through a translucent plastic bulb that sits inside the four sides of the main body.

Cradle

3D Printed ABS Plastic, Candle, and Water

 27x24x24cm

2013

Cradle is once again modeled on a classic Greek vase, with a circular hole carved out of the side. There is just enough of the bottom left to hold a small amount of water that suspends a small floating hollow orb with no top. This houses a tea candle. I saw that, along with the industrial model, education's insistence that students' self-esteem was never challenged had warped education into an overprotective parent that was stopping children from developing.

3D Printed ABS Plastic and LED lights

 7x7x7cm for each orb

In Orbs, though the light appears to be free, it still had to be contained in a vessel and the only movement that was allowed was the one that the water provided. Despite appearances, the light is not free to operate as it might wish.

Slim

3D Printed ABS Plastic and LED light

 27x10x10cm

 2014

After the deviation of the Orb project I decided to return to the Greek influences. Slim had a similar switch mechanism to orbs using the same submersible party lights, though this one did not change colours. I also experimented with a new kind of multi-coloured filament that had several shades on one spool.

Geo

3D Printed Acrylic and Candle Light

 27x25x25cm

2014

Geo was another return to the more classical Greek shapes I had used in my earlier ideas, it was also another attempt at using a real flame to represent "the self". The design featured a white long bulb that was inserted from the bottom, like Rose it had a bottom plate that snapped into place with four 5mm magnets to access the candle. I used the same multi colour filament that I tried with Slim with a similar printing method as Rose, pausing the print and and replacing plastic to change the colour.

The Cage

3D Printed Acrylic and LED light

 27x24x20cm

2014

In Cage, I changed the form from a vase to a canopic jar. These jars were used in mummification to store the organs that would be needed to restore the mummy to full life in the next world. In this work, the light is a “problem child” who is blocking the opening of the jar, preventing it from being used for its intended purpose. Although blocking the opening is an act of rebellion, this will lead the jar to be useless and it and the light in it will be discarded, because if it doesn’t keep the social body alive, it has no purpose.
